Since the inception of the UFC Heavyweight Championship, there has been no champion who has been able to defend the title on more than two occasions. Of the 17 title reigns that the division has seen till date, only Brock Lesnar, Randy Couture, and Tim Sylvia have retained the title after two defenses. Frank Mir was crowned the champion for a short while but after he suffered a road accident, he had to relinquish the title before he could have the opportunity to defend it.

He would go on to win the interim UFC Heavyweight Championship title several years later but he failed to win the title unification bout against Brock Lesnar at UFC 100. After suffering another bout of injury, Mir is ready to step inside the ring once again as he gets ready to take on Daniel Cormier, hoping to get the better of him so that he can earn another crack at the UFC Heavyweight Championship.

Cormier is undefeated in his last 11 fights. The two of them were set to face last year before Frank Mir got injured, delaying the match till UFC on FOX 7, which is scheduled to take place on the 20^th of April in San Jose.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, the veteran UFC fighter stated that as far as the art of jiu-jitsu is concerned, there is no one who comes even close to Werdum and he is, without the doubt, the best jiu-jitsu artist in the division. Werdum secured a pair of wins in 2012 and he is now set to take on Anotonio Rogerio Noguera in a few months’ time in June. When asked what kind of an outcome he expected when the two big Heavyweights of the division take each other on in June, Mir did not have any direct answer. However, he did give a hint on who he thinks would take the fight when he stated that the Brazilian would have it really tough.

Frank Mir himself, on the other hand, might just land a fight with former Strike Force Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier with months of speculation regarding the fight. However, nothing concrete has come out of it yet but news is expected soon.

Cormier, who is set to fight Dion Staring in the last event at Strike Force recently made a visit to the studios of FUEL TV’s UFC Tonight, where he stated that although White made no hesitation in handing him the chance to fight for the title, but Cormier stated that he would rather earn his shot. He mentioned that after the fight against Staring, he will not be an immediate contender for the title but will have to earn him way up there, and he mentioned the fight against Frank Mir will just be a stepping stone on that journey to the top.

It should be mentioned that White also has plans to pit Cormier against the UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones if the plan to pit him against Velasquez doesn’t go ahead, but it doesn’t seem that Cormier will be ready to accept the fight.

The Olympian is extremely choosy about who he fights and going down a weight division to Light Heavyweight will not suit him at all at this moment and as a result, it seems that the UFC has only one option left and that is to hand him the match against Frank Mir as early as possible, probably at UFC 158.
